🎉 2025 Year in Review
2025 was a transformative year for CryoCloud — packed with technical progress, product launches, and community growth. Here are the moments that shaped this year:
Five new algorithms were developed in-house and added to the app: automated shape mask creation for improved results and automation (AutoMask), reference-based 3D & 2D class selection (AutoClass3D & AutoClass2D), GPU-accelerated MotionCorrection (MotionCorr CC), and micrograph contamination detection and removal (part of CryoCloud Picker).
New tools to enable end-to-end automated workflows.
Introduction of Targets and a series of project-grid improvements to make data management faster and more intuitive.
🔬 Large-scale EMPIAR benchmarks and case studies
We validated CryoCloud automated workflows at scale — from an 8-dataset GPCR benchmark to a 53-dataset EMPIAR study spanning five distinct target classes. Additional case studies across small molecule drug discovery, antibody discovery and vaccine design further demonstrated consistent, interpretable results across targets ranging from ~85 kDa to large, heterogeneous complexes.
🌍 Growing adoption across industry & academia
We welcomed new private-cloud deployments, new evaluation customers, and a steadily growing academic user base — now spanning 25+ countries.
👥 Team expansion & organisational growth
We doubled in size this year (growing from 6 to 12 people!), strengthening our scientific, engineering, product, applications, and commercial teams. This expansion allows us to build faster, support more users, and push automation further across the platform.
📣 Funding to accelerate innovation
We announced a €2M seed round, supporting faster development and deeper automation across our workflows.

December 5th marked three years since CryoCloud went live. Here’s what three years look like in numbers:

Our recent Map of the Month series featured two small molecule case studies reprocessed on CryoCloud:
📌 October – GLP-1 receptor in complex with its natural ligand GLP-1
Final map: 2.7 Å from 40 hours of cloud computing
📌 November – CDK-activating kinase bound to the covalent inhibitor THZ1

End-to-end automated workflow for macromolecular crystallography
CryoCloud Picker improvements: New GPCR-specific model and contamination segmentation for more robust particle picking across challenging datasets.
Automation enablers: Automated uploads, automated masking, and reference-based 2D & 3D class selection to reduce manual intervention and improve consistency.
Helical reconstruction workflow: End-to-end data processing from raw movies to final maps for helical specimens.
New tools, including LocScale2, CryoSieve, EMReady and many platform improvements for data management and ease of use.
